| Central Library, BGSBU works under the supervision of Library Advisory Committee of which Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor is the Chairman. The library as on date stands divided into twelve sections viz. Circulation, Acquisition, Classification, Cataloguing, Periodical, Internet Lab, Reference and Information Services, Stack Area, Reading Room, Newspapers and Magazines, Digital Documents Section, Dissertations and Thesis Section. The Library remains open from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm throughout the year and observe holiday on four national holidays and second and fourth Sunday of every month. With the view to provide library services to students and faculty in their respective departments, departmental Libraries have been created in the College of Engineering and Technology and Centre for Biodiversity Studies. On the similar lines some more departmental libraries will be created in the near future.
The Central Library maintains a collection of over 19,000 documents, including more than 1000 Digital Documents fully classified as per Dewey Decimal Scheme of Classification (DDC). Library maintains a separate book bank meant for students of socially disadvantaged categories. The library stands registered as an institutional member of DELNET-a network of 2196 member libraries all across the globe. DELNET provides access to readers of member libraries to more than 12 million documents available in these member libraries in Common Communication Format (CCF). Members can acquire these documents any time, except those pertaining to grey literature, within a fortnight on inter library loan basis under the agreement signed. On the similar lines database of Library documents stands available on IndiaCat (A union bibliographic database of more than 135 universities with more than 70 lakh unique records maintained by INFLIBNET)
The Central Library subscribes to 25 open access online databases, a few electronic Journals and Print Version of more than 76 National and Foreign journals. The routine library service offered includes circulation service, reference & information service, reprographic facility, Periodical service, CD-ROM browsing, online access and internet facility to members. Library subscribes to more than 20 daily newspapers and almost equal no of magazines in English, Hindi and Urdu languages, just to keep library members acquainted with current affairs and the latest developments in their area of interest. Library maintains a complete database of library collection on SOUL software (Software for University Libraries) installed for automating library services and activities. Data entry of documents is up to date, Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) service is being provided to members on intranet in entire campus. To facilitate more federated search among students and faculty members about the usefulness of open access documents, we at library have designed/created a independent library website with URL: https://sites.google.com/site/clbgsbu/
With the view to facilitate faculty to select and procure latest and relevant books in library, the library successfully organized book exhibition on campus during the year 2009-10 and 2011-12. Apart from this the faculty members were also deputed for selecting on spot books from the world book fair during the year 2008-09, New Delhi. Total no of documents added during the year 2010-11 and 2011-12 is 4474, this includes the books, purchased, received as gratis, CD documents, Dissertations and thesis.
The Library so far has received grants from the agencies like, Department of Social welfare Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir, Central Wakf Council, National Board of Higher Mathematics, Department of Biotechnology, GOI etc from time to time. Apart from this library also receives a good number of books in the form of gratis items. Library grant from NBHM has been received so far on regular basis.
Efforts are afoot to make the university library a house of wisdom where knowledge will rest and be exploited to its optimum through quality library service.
